Ayurvedic Truth about Ama & Psoriasis
According to Ayurveda, psoriasis is not simply a skin disorder, even though it manifests itself on the skin. It is a long-term systemic disorder, closely connected with Ama, the toxic residue formed due to weak digestion and impaired metabolism (Agni). According to Ayurveda, poor digestion leads to the production of Ama that moves within the body and eventually causes chronic inflammatory illnesses such as psoriasis.
Ama in Ayurveda: Root Cause Beneath the Skin
Ayurveda defines Ama as an uncooked or undigested waste product of metabolism that imparts disharmony within the body. Ama is obstructive, heavy, sticky and expansive.
Ayurveda explains Ama as:
- An outcome of poor or disordered Agni (digestive fire)
- One of the main factors that leads to dosha imbalance is mainly Pitta and Kapha.
- An obstruction of srotas (body channels)
- One of the causes of rakta dushti (blood vitiation)
- One of the factors that depletes ojas, immunity and healing ability.
Significant exposure of Ama to aggravated doshas will cause the movement of aggravated doshas through the gut and to deep tissues, culminating in the skin and resulting in chronic, relapsing diseases such as psoriasis.
How Ama Triggers Psoriasis
Ama has a pathogenic role in psoriasis:
- Ama developed in the intestine is carried into the bloodstream and pollutes the blood and the skin tissues.
- A combination of Ama-Pitta leads to redness, inflammation, burning and itching.
- Ama-Kapha causes a thick scale, heaviness and chronicity.
- Obstructed channels hinder the delivery of nutrition to the skin and delay healing.
- Low ojas is the reason why people have frequent relapses and impaired immunity.
Therefore, psoriasis is not a local derangement of the skin in Ayurveda- it is an Ama-initiated systemic inflammatory disease.
Signs of Ama Commonly Seen in Psoriasis Patients
Ayurveda focuses on the early identification of Ama. Common signs include:
- The coating on the tongue is thick and white or yellow in colour.
- Lack of appetite or abnormal digestion.
- Constipation, acidity, looseness, or constipation.
- Bulkiness, lack of energy, and feel heaviness.
- Exacerbation of skin lesions with heavy, incompatible or junk food.
- Recurrent exacerbation of external treatment.
The absence of paying attention to these signs permits Ama to deepen & making psoriasis more persistent.
Agni, Ama & Recurrence of Psoriasis.
Recurrence of psoriasis is one of the most annoying factors associated with the disease. Ayurveda explains this clearly as: Without Agni being corrected, Ama is still going to be formed even when the skin is showing visible improvement.
Without strengthening the digestion, Ama accumulates once again, and doshas once again become aggravated and reappear on the skin. Thus, psoriasis can only be managed sustainably by first restoring Agni, rather than only suppressing symptoms.
Ayurvedic Management of Psoriasis through the Ama.
Ayurveda focuses on the elimination of Ama and restoring its causes:
- Deepana–Pachana: Enhancing digestion to break down the Ama that is there.
- Ahara amendment: Light, warm, fresh and compatible foods.
- Control of the lifestyle: Stress management, routine and proper rest.
- Shodhana (detoxification): Panchakarma treatments, such as Virechana and Basti, where necessary, to eliminate deep-seated Ama.
- Rasayana support: Ojas enhances immunity and long-term remission.
The Ama-psoriasis cycle is meant to be terminated permanently with this holistic approach.
