Ayurvedic Truth about Milk & Dairy
Milk is something which has been revered in Ayurveda since time immemorial days not only as a food, but also as a rasayana when taken properly. It was based on sattva guna, which gives milk a natural power to sustain, refresh and relax the system. But consumed improperly, the same milk may be heavy, obstructive and hard to digest.
Milk in Ayurveda : More than Just Nutrition
Ayurveda considers milk as:
- Sattvic in nature, and it favours mental clarity and emotional balance.
- The subtle essence that helps to achieve immunity, vitality and resilience, ojas is a builder of ojas.
- A profound replenisher of tissues (dhatus)
- A natural tranquilizer of the nervous system, helping to have a restful sleep.
However, Ayurveda also warns that drinking milk contrary to its principles : cold, mixed or at the incorrect time, may result in ama (toxic accumulation), slow-moving digestion and internal disequilibrium.
How Ayurveda Wants You to Drink Milk
Ayurveda recommends a specific attitude to milk to benefit it :
- Always warm, never cold
Increase digestibility with mild spices, including :
- Turmeric
- Cardamom
- Nutmeg
Optimal time : Evening or just before going to bed.
Less is more: Milk is preferably consumed alone.
This is the way through which milk can feed instead of overloading the digestive fire (agni).
Milk Combinations to Avoid
Ayurveda explicitly forbids the combination of milk with some types of foods, since such combinations disrupt the digestive process and cause internal imbalance :
- Fruits
- Citrus foods
- Salty foods
- Sour foods
These contradictory combinations (viruddha ahara) retard digestion and encourage imbalance in the long run.
What About Other Dairy Products ?
Curd (Yogurt)
- Should be taken during the day only.
- Add black pepper or cumin to aid in digestion.
- Not at night, because it makes one heavy and sticky.
Paneer & Cheese
- Heavy by nature
- Should be eaten occasionally, not every day.
Buttermilk (Takra)
- Light and digestive
- Ideal after meals
- Promotes intestinal wellness and digestion.
Dairy Is Not the Enemy Misuse Is the Enemy
Ayurveda has no objections to dairy; it only teaches the process of putting it to intelligent use. Dairy feeds the body when taken, depending on the rate of digestion, time and combinations. In its misuse, it is a source of imbalance. Eat dairy as per Ayurveda protocols and have it nourish & without bothering your gut.
Dosha-Wise Dairy Guidance
Vata: Spiced warm milk is relaxing and soothing.
Pitta: Do not overdo it; do not consume excessive milk and dairy products that are acidic.
Kapha: Prefer buttermilk, limit milk, paneer & cheese consumption.
