Dietary Changes Required in Alopecia — An Ayurvedic Perspective

Alopecia (hairfall & hairloss disorder) is not just a cosmetic issue; in Ayurveda, it reflects internal imbalances, in particular, Pitta dosha, Rakta dhatu, and poor digestion (agni). Hair (Kesha) is believed to be a by-product of bone metabolism (Asthi dhatu) and any eating habit that disrupts the digestion process, warms the blood, or dries the tissues can immediately weaken the roots of hair and the health of the scalp.

Pitta Aggravation and Alopecia

The cases of alopecia are predominant by Pitta alone or with Vata. Too much heat, inflammation, and systemic toxicity destroy hair follicles, reduces duration of hair growth, and causes hair thinning or patchy loss.

Diet plays a crucial role in either aggravating or correcting this imbalance.

Dietary Factors That Worsen Alopecia (Especially Pitta Type)

1. Too Spicy and Chilli-Peppy Foods.

Excessive consumption of chillies, fried foods, and strong spices raises the body heat and worsens Pitta, which results in the inflammation and itching of the scalp, early greying, and loss of hair.

2. Heavy Dairy: Paneer & Cheese

Paneer and cheese are thick (guru) and viscous. They also obstruct pathways to nourish hair roots, and lead to permanent loss of hair when there is weak digestion.

3. Viruddha Ahara (Food Combinations that are incompatible)

Some food combinations hinder the digestion process and form ama (toxins) that directly affect hair nourishment. Common examples include:

  • Milk with salty or sour foods
  • Milk with meals
  •  Milk-based smoothies

These mixtures of nutrients affect nutrient assimilation, and the strength of the hair is compromised in the long run.

4. Cold Blended Foods and Smoothies.

Even heavy and smoothies with coldness are going to hush the digestive fire and raise the levels of Kapha and ama, indirectly deteriorating alopecia, although they are considered healthy.

5. Excessively Dry Foods

Dry foods that are consumed without healthy fats exacerbate Vata and leave hair follicles without lubrication and nutrition that nourish them, causing them to dry, become brittle, and shed more frequently.

Ayurvedic Dietary Recommendations on Alopecia.

Ayurveda stresses feeding the hair by soothing Pitta, enhancing the digestive system and enriching Rakta and Asthi dhatu:

  • Freshly cooked, warm food with a slight spicing.
  • Consume healthy fats in moderation, such as ghee.
  • Do not mix foods that are not compatible (viruddha ahara).
  • Drink milk at the right time, and in the right way, that is, warm and without any accompaniment.
  • Concentrate on digestion-first eating instead of raw foods or cold foods.

Key Insight

In alopecia, hair loss often begins in the kitchen before it appears on the scalp. Eating the right diet based on Ayurvedic principles cools Pitta, purifies Rakta, improving digestion and regenerates natural hair growth. Ayurveda states that the health of the hair is result of harmony within the body, not only in the external treatment.
