Heredity & Vitiligo (White Patches)
In today's modern times, due to daily lifestyle, stress, incompatible diet and lifestyle, insomnia, etc., the number of various diseases is rapidly increasing, such as diabetes, hypertension, leucoderma (white patches), etc.
Leucoderma is a type of skin disease that is commonly known as vitiligo. In this condition, the melanocyte cells located in the skin, which produce melanin pigment, begin to be destroyed. This reduces the production of black colour in the skin, and white patches begin to appear on the skin. Approximately 0.5% to 2% of the world's population is affected by leucoderma. However, in India, the population of affected individuals is approximately 8.8% in different cities. There are several reasons for the formation of white patches, one of which is genetic. Children of individuals affected by white patches have a 6% to 8% risk of developing white patches. The rate of the white patch formation process varies from person to person. In some people, white patches develop slowly, and in others, they develop rapidly. These white patches can appear on any part of the body, such as the face, hands, feet, lips, or genitals, and can be of any shape or size.
The main causes of white patches (leucoderma) are as follows:
- The body's immune system is not functioning properly.
- Heredity: This disease can be passed from parents to children.
- The digestive system or liver is not functioning properly.
- Incompatible diet: such as consuming milk after eating meat or fish.
- Nutritional deficiencies: A lack of vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients in the body.
- Disturbed lifestyle, mental stress, depression, etc.
- Worms: Intestinal worms
The effect of heredity on vitiligo (leucoderma) patients:
It has been observed that some individuals with vitiligo (leucoderma) have children who also develop vitiligo. Although the risk of children of affected individuals developing vitiligo is approximately 6% to 8%, it is not true that all children of people with vitiligo will also develop the condition. Such families can prevent vitiligo in their children by following proper medical advice and dietary and lifestyle guidelines. These families face discrimination in society, which is not right. Some people also have the misconception that vitiligo is contagious and can spread from one person to another, which is completely false.
Individuals with vitiligo do not experience physical problems, but its mental and social effects are significant. Difficulty in marriage for boys and girls with vitiligo is a major problem. Often, the presence of vitiligo is hidden before marriage, and its discovery later leads to problems in married life. By improving the negative attitudes prevalent in society regarding vitiligo, we should boost the morale of affected individuals and treat them like normal people.
Management Protocol
According to modern medical science, it is an incurable disease, but vitiligo can be cured with Ayurvedic medicine and proper diet and lifestyle. Ayurvedic treatment is completely beneficial in this disease.
During the treatment of vitiligo, keep the following points in mind:
- Food: Avoid consuming sour, spicy, and difficult-to-digest foods. Do not consume curd, lemon, sour fruits, etc. You can consume bananas, vegetables, etc. Use only fresh, clean, and natural products.
- Consume a balanced and nutritious diet. Eat your meals regularly and avoid incompatible food combinations.
- Practice yoga, pranayama, and exercise to keep both your body and mind healthy.
- Maintain good hygiene; this strengthens the immune system and keeps the body healthy.
- Do not consume tobacco, alcohol, or other intoxicating substances, as they cause indirect harm.
- Using traditional ayurvedic botanicals such as Bakuchi, Manjistha, Neem etc for regulating the melanin synthesis.
