Psoriasis: An Ayurvedic View of Skin Balance, Triggers, and Daily Care

Psoriasis is a long-term and recurring skin disease that may be observed in the form of thickened, scaled and dry patches of the skin that are painful, reddish, scaly & itchy. In the Ayurvedic perspective, the skin is not managed as an independent organ; its condition reflects the state of Agni (digestive/metabolism), Rakta (blood tissue), the Twak (skin) and the mind-body stress axis. Due to disturbances in the internal balance, the skin might express those imbalances occasionally, especially at the transition of seasons, emotional tension, bad habits, and improper food. The main goal of Ayurvedic care protocols is to support the body’s internal harmony so that skin can gradually regain stability and resilience. Ayurveda broadly understands chronic, scaly, inflamed skin conditions under the umbrella of Kushtha, where involvement of Doshas (especially Vata–Kapha & in some cases Pitta in redness/heat) also with Rakta dushti leads to dryness, scaling, thickening, itching & flare-ups. The approach emphasizes aggravated doshas in individuals because psoriasis patterns vary significantly from person to person. A personalized protocol plan combines pathya (wholesome diet), vihara (daily routine), stress management, gentle external care & internal correction to reduce the replacement tendency over time.

Psoriasis – Ayurvedic View

·     Dryness, cracking, rough scaling → commonly linked to Vata aggravation.

·     Thickness, heaviness, persistent scaling/itch → commonly linked to Kapha involvement.

·     Redness, burning, warmth → suggests Pitta + Rakta involvement.

·     Frequent recurrence → indicates deeper imbalance and the need for long-term discipline (anushasan) in routine.

Common Ayurvedic trigger patterns (Nidana)

·     Viruddha Ahara (incompatible food combinations), irregular eating, and overeating.

·     Frequent intake of guru/snigdha-heavy, fried, packaged foods that burden digestion.

· Mandagni (weak digestive fire) leading to improper metabolism and internal imbalance.

·     Stress, anxiety, disturbed sleep (Manasika factors), worsening flare cycles.

·     Cold, dry seasons, sudden temperature changes, and excessive exposure to wind.

·     Excessive use of harsh soaps, perfumes, sanitizers, and chemical irritants.

·     Skin trauma/friction and repetitive scratching that keeps the cycle active.

Pathya: Diet that supports balance

·     Prefer fresh, home-cooked meals that feel light and easy to digest

·     Keep meals timely; avoid long gaps and late-night heavy dinners

·     Include warm, simple foods like moong dal, seasonal vegetables, soups, and cooked grains as tolerated

·     Hydrate well; choose warm water or room temperature water based on comfort

·     Reduce foods that commonly worsen heaviness/inflammation for many people:

o   Excess fried, packaged, refined sugar

o   Too much curd/cheese and very cold items (especially at night)

o   Over-spiced, very sour, or very salty foods if redness/heat is prominent

·     Avoid incompatible combinations that many clinicians advise limiting in chronic skin issues:

o   Milk with salty/sour foods, fruit with dairy, heavy meals followed by cold drinks

(Diet should always be individualized—what triggers one person may not trigger another.)

Vihara: Daily routine and lifestyle precautions

·     Maintain regular sleep; late nights often worsen flare sensitivity

·     Add daily movement—walking, stretching, light exercise to support metabolism

·     Practice stress management: pranayama, meditation, guided relaxation, or counselling support

·     Avoid long exposure to extreme cold/dry winds; protect skin in winter

·     Keep clothing loose and breathable to reduce friction and sweat irritation

·     Do not scratch use soothing care to reduce itch and prevent injury-triggered spread

Gentle external care (Bahya Parimarjana)

·     Use mild cleansers; avoid harsh soaps and frequent hot-water baths

·     Prefer lukewarm water; hot water can increase dryness and itching

·     Moisturize consistently; choose simple, non-irritating emollients

·     Scalp involvement: avoid aggressive scratching; keep routine gentle and consistent

·     Avoid random over-the-counter steroid use without supervision (rebound flares can occur)

When to seek early consultation

·     Frequent relapses, spreading lesions, severe itching disrupting sleep

·     Nail changes (pitting/thickening) or joint pain/stiffness

·     Persistent redness/burning or cracked, painful plaques

·     Emotional distress, anxiety, or social withdrawal due to appearance
