Folliculitis is an inflammatory condition of the hair follicles, described in Ayurveda as a Rakta dushti janya vyadhi (blood-related disorder) and correlated with Pidika roga. It is characterized by red or pus-filled eruptions around hair follicles due to Pitta and Kapha dosha imbalance and vitiation of Rakta and Meda dhatus.

Signs & Symptoms (Lakshana)

  • Small red or pus-filled boils around hair follicles.

  • Burning (Daha), pain (Toda), itching (Kandu), and swelling (Shopha).

  • Common areas affected: scalp, beard, back, thighs, and buttocks.

Causative Factors (Nidana)

  • Dietary: Oily, sour, salty, and inflammatory (Vidahi) foods; overuse of dairy, meat, and fried items.

  • Lifestyle: Poor hygiene, tight or synthetic clothing, excessive sweating, and day sleep.

  • Dosha Imbalance: Pitta-Kapha aggravation affecting Rakta and Meda dhatus.

  • Psychological: Stress, anger, and mental strain increase Pitta and worsen inflammation.

  • Genetic: Hereditary skin sensitivities may predispose individuals to recurrent folliculitis.

Ayurvedic Approach to Treatment

At Aimil Healthcare, we manage Folliculitis by purifying the blood (Rakta shodhana), eliminating metabolic toxins (Ama), and balancing Pitta and Kapha doshas. • Incorporate light (Laghu), bitter (Tikta), and astringent (Kashaya) foods.

  • Avoid oily, spicy, fried, and sour food items.

  • Favor detoxifying foods like barley, old rice, leafy greens, and bitter herbs.

2. Lifestyle Recommendations (Vihara Chikitsa)

  • Maintain skin hygiene, avoid tight or synthetic clothing.

  • Reduce heat and sweat exposure; practice Yoga and Pranayama.

  • Ensure sufficient rest to support immunity and skin repair.

3. Panchakarma Therapy (Shodhana Chikitsa)

  • Virechana (purgation) for Pitta and Rakta dosha cleansing.

  • Raktamokshana (bloodletting) in chronic or stubborn cases.

  • Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (steam therapy) as preparatory procedures.

4. Palliative Therapy (Shamana Chikitsa)

  • Use of Tikta-Kashaya rasa herbs to reduce inflammation and purify blood.

  • Topical application of Lepa (herbal paste) and medicated oils to affected areas.
